The Rainbow Stone (Ilowiecki) page 2

Carla and her cat “Christmas” were puzzled. They had been out in the rowboat on Stone Lake every day for a month, looking for the winged rainbow fish. There was no sign of their bright colors flashing beneath the water’s surface. The rainbow fish had lived in the lake forever, so it seemed to Carla.

Her grandma told stories of seeing them play beneath the rainbows
that often shone over the lake when she was a girl.  The people of Stone
Lake always delighted seeing the fish splash, flip, and fly beneath the
gleaming bright rainbows that used to appear with unusual frequency, above
the lake.

Now the people of the lake were enamored with gazing at the rainbow stone on
display in the museum.  It seems they had forgotten the wonder and
beauty of the rainbow fish.  No one seemed concerned that the last rainbow
to appear over Stone Lake was just an ordinary rainbow.  Its colors were dull
and faint. The beautiful fish did not come out to play beneath it. Only Carla
and Christmas noticed how quickly it disappeared.

Legendary Stone Found!!!
Ima R. Eporter

After years of debating its existence, divers have retrieved a mysterious multi-colored stone from Stone Lake in Fickleham County, now on display in the Fickleham Natural History Museum.

Scientists are fascinated with its brilliant ever-changing colors.  “It seems to have a power that generates colors form inside,”  commented Rodney Cleverfield, the museum scientist.  “A thorough study of the stone is being planned,” he said. The display is open to the public 9 – 5 M-F, 9 to 9 on Saturday. Closed Sundays.

“Look Christmas, the rainbow is gone,” Carla said, “the beautiful fish did not come out to play.  We’ve got to find them.”  She and Christmas climbed into the rowboat and pushed it away from the dock.  Christmas scanned the water while Carla pulled on the oars.

“Carla look,” Christmas meowed.  Carla stopped rowing; hoping to see one of the beautiful fish.  Instead she saw a turtle poke his head out of the water.
“He wants you to follow him,” said Christmas.
Will Carla and Christmas find the Rainbow fish?  Will the mystery of the stone be solved?
